HTC Sensation XE Lite Review

HTC Sensation XE Lite

There are no surprises with the HTC Sensation XE Lite, after all it is essentially the same handset as the Sensation XE, in other words HTC's Sensation XE Lite is a fast smartphone with a great screen offering good value for such a powerful phone, better value than the "full fat" version which comes with the Beats Audio headphones bundled in the retail pack a slong as you already have a decent set of headphones. In terms of software the phone runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread with the excellent HTC Sense 3.0 interface overlaid (however this phone is now being upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich and Sense 3.6). The addition of Sense not only adds a lot of useful features such as easy social networking and a number of useful bundled apps, it also offers the best of both worlds as you can still have a mostly Gingerbread experience. There is plenty of storage with 1Gb on-board for apps and a microSD card slot for expansion, so you're unlikely to run out of space. The camera is good producing snaps with vibrant colours and video recording capability at HD 1080p.

The HD video recording feature is accessed by through the camera or camcorder app and the default resolution is set to 960 x 540, but you have the option of recording in 720p or 1080p modes and there is even a cool slow motion shooting option. The HTC connected media app allows easy streaming of music and video to other wireless devices such as TV's, laptops or tablets. You can also download movies to watch using the HTC Watch service which is also preloaded, this is essentially the HTC version of iTunes.

One thing that is different about the HTC Sensation XE Lite, it actually has a slightly bigger battery than the original but it doesn't seem to make a huge difference, like the Sensation XE you should get you through a full day of mixed use, but don't expect much more. The are numerous connectivity options included, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, USB and even DLNA. HTC has pre-installed a few useful little apps on the XE Lite and the simple Flashlight app is effective and very useful. The Mirror app is another simple and useful feature which allows you to use the HTC Sensation XE Lite as a mirror by using the front facing camera. Some apps are less useful however, the included HTC Hub app is nowhere near as good as Google Play for instance.

The HTC Sensation XE Lite is a great smartphone, the upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich and Sense 3.6 gives the phone a new lease of life and allows it to still compete with the likes of the iPhone 4S and the Samsung Galaxy S2. At the price, the handset is infact a bit of a steal, one of the cheapest Ice Cream Sandwich phones around and particularly good audio. The good news is the phone doesn't look like a cheap phone, at first glance it could be mistaken for the much more expensive HTC One X and shares the same impressive build quality and design features, only the smaller screen gives the game away!
